The Elmgrove Condos were developed as a house hack for the owner of Code & Craft Architecture. The original 1,000-square-foot cottage, built in 1942, is situated on a desirable corner lot in the Gatewood community of West Seattle. The owner purchased this house as her primary residence and, along with her husband, renovated it on weekends. This labor of love sparked an interest in utilizing the urban lot more economically and efficiently by adding a new 1,000-square-foot modern home at the back of the property.
While the original cottage received a beautiful facelift, including a new roof and siding, extended eaves, updated utilities, and a renovated kitchen, it served as a lovely backdrop for the modern two-level house developed in the backyard. Once complete, the property was landscaped to function independently and was put on the market as two separate houses. This property is an excellent example of how Code & Craft Architecture employs skilled strategic thinking to achieve a property's highest and best use.
